Uganda Class D work permit for investors

The Uganda class D work permit for investors is designed for investors and business people who wish to invest into a business in Uganda which they may work in.

It is not a requirement for the applicant of the Uganda Class D work permit for investors to have a Ugandan partner and their family may be included on the application subject to certain requirements.

Who should apply for a Uganda Class D work permit?

A person intending to carry on a business or trade on his or her own account, or as partners in a firm in Uganda.

Priority investment areas

The purpose of the Uganda Class D work permit is to encourage investors who will add to the Ugandan economy. Various sectors have been identified as priority investment areas:

  • floriculture
  • fish and fish farming industry
  • cotton and textile industry
  • building and construction industry
  • food and beverages sector
  • education sector
  • financial services
  • electronics sector
  • dairy sector
  • tourism sector

Requirements of the application

The investor applicant must satify the immigration board of the following:

  • if a licence is required to enable him or her to engage in the trade or business, he or she is in possession of such licence or will be able to obtain one; and
  • he or she has in his or her own right and at his or her full and free disposition such sum as may be prescribed by the responsible Ministry in respect of any particular trade or business

Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA)Uganda Class D work permit for investors protection

Uganda is a member of the MIGA. Thier mission is to promote foreign direct investment (FDI) into developing countries to help support economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve people’s lives.

Via the MIGA foreign investors into Uganda can insure their investment against a wide range of non-commercial risks including expropriation, currency transfers, breach of contract and civil strife.
